How to Get the Most Out of Your Thermal Gear

How to Get the Most Out of Your Thermal Gear

Your thermal imaging device — whether a scope or handheld — is one of the most powerful tools you can take into the field. With the right setup and care, it can completely change the way you see and experience the outdoors. Whether you’re new to thermal imaging or a long-time Pulsar user, these simple tips will help you get the most out of your gear and ensure you’re always seeing clearly, no matter the conditions.

🔧 1. Take the Time to Learn Your Settings

Every environment is different — fog, rain, open paddocks, or dense bush all affect how heat is displayed. Spend some time experimenting with brightness, contrast, and sensitivity modes on your device.
Tip: Try adjusting these settings during both day and night use to see how small changes can reveal more detail.

🌡️ 2. Calibrate Regularly

Calibration (or “NUC”) keeps your thermal image crisp by correcting for internal temperature shifts inside the sensor. Pulsar devices do this automatically, but you can also trigger it manually whenever you notice a soft or uneven image..
Tip: Make it a habit to recalibrate before scanning a new area — it only takes a second and makes a noticeable difference.

🔋 3. Manage Your Power Wisely

Battery life can vary depending on temperature and use. Keep spare, fully charged batteries with you, especially in cold conditions where battery performance can drop faster and on extended trips.
Tip: Turn off Wi-Fi streaming and reduce screen brightness when not needed — small changes that can add up to extra hours in the field.

🧽 4. Keep It Clean and Protected

Dust, moisture, and fingerprints can affect image clarity. Always use a soft microfiber cloth to clean the lens and store your scope in a protective case when not in use.
Tip: Avoid cleaning with regular fabric or paper towels — they can scratch the lens coating over time.

🌙 5. Secure and Steady Handling

A secure and properly aligned mount ensures accuracy. Check your mounting system periodically, especially after travel or extended use.
Tip: Use a quality mount system designed for your model — it helps maintain zero and reduces vibration. Vortex and Leopold are our go-to for the boys in the office.

For handhelds, make sure you have a comfortable, steady grip or a wrist strap for stability — especially when scanning for extended periods.
Tip: The more stable your device, the clearer your image will be — especially when zoomed in.

🌧️ 6. Test in Real Conditions

Don’t wait until your next hunt or job to test your scope. Head out at dusk or dawn to practice scanning under real conditions. It’s the best way to learn how objects and animals appear through thermal imaging — and to build confidence in your gear.

💡 7. Keep Your Firmware Updated

Pulsar regularly releases firmware updates that improve performance, battery efficiency, and add new features. Connect your device through the Pulsar Stream Vision app to check for updates.
Tip: Updating takes just a few minutes and keeps your device performing at its best.
